KIRCO's Cardinal Health Distribution Center Project Garners Multiple Awards at 2015 Brownfield Conference

KIRCO reported that its Cardinal Health Distribution Center redevelopment project in Detroit was recognized with both the Grand Prize Award and the People's Choice Award at Brownfields 2015 in Chicago competing with projects across the nation.

The event is a conference and trade show focused on environmental revitalization and economic development.

Earlier, the Cardinal Health Distribution Center project also was recognized with the national Renewal Award for Environmental Impact and the Phoenix Award for USEPA Region 5 (including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota).

According to a media release, designed as the medical distribution facility for Cardinal Health to service Henry Ford Health System, Detroit Medical Center and other medical centers, the project was the inaugural step in a comprehensive community redevelopment plan by Henry Ford Health System. The plan includes improving hundreds of blighted, contaminated and obsolete properties south of the Detroit hospital campus into a thriving mixed-use neighborhood with residential, commercial and med-tech businesses.

"It has been rewarding to lead the development and construction of a project that has such a meaningful impact to our customer, its clients and the City of Detroit," said Dean Kiriluk, chief investment officer, KIRCO. "And being recognized for our efforts with these prestigious awards is a testament to the entire team that was involved, including Cardinal Health, Henry Ford Health System, Detroit Medical Center, AKT Peerless and more, that what we accomplished is truly impactful."

The Renewal Award was judged by 29 industry experts who evaluated over 80 nominated projects from across the county. The Phoenix Award is overseen by a non-profit organization and selected by a panel of national experts.

Each of the regional Phoenix Award winners representing the ten regions of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) competed for both the National Grand Prize and People's Choice Awards. The Grand Prize Award was judged by a panel of industry experts and awarded to the Brownfield project that was determined to be Best of Show, while the People's Choice Award was presented to the Phoenix Award winning Brownfield project that received the greatest number of votes during the 2015 Brownfield's Conference.

The newly constructed 275,000 square-foot distribution facility opened in May 2015 and represents a new investment of approximately $30 million in the neighborhood. The redevelopment incorporates many design elements, including a passive vapor mitigation system and highly efficient mechanical and electrical systems monitored by an elaborate network of direct digital controls.

The site was assembled from 80 individual properties. The assemblage was undertaken by Henry Ford Health System over three years and comprised of properties owned by private individuals, businesses and numerous tax-reverted properties. A number of the properties required processing through the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority in order to provide insurable titles. Acquisition of the final parcels included in the project occurred concurrently with final site plan, building design, municipal approval and Brownfield incentive approval processes.

The property assemblage contained 23 blighted structures requiring hazardous material surveys, abatement and demolition before redevelopment. These properties included vacant lots, vacant residential homes, commercial parcels, a variety of industrial buildings and properties, and streets and alleyways that would require abandonment.

Sarah Jessica Parker, in partnership with Gilt, kicked off the exclusive launch of SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker Bridal, Gilt’s first foray into bridal ready-to-wear that would have Carrie Bradshaw swooning.

The collection includes dresses, skirts, bodysuits and other pieces, ranging in price from $295 to $2,395 and from sizes 0 to 14.

"Collaborating with Gilt on my first bridal ready-to-wear collection was an opportunity I couldn't pass up," said Sarah Jessica Parker. "The team there is brilliant and allowed me to be imaginative and take risks as I was designing for the non-traditional bride. It has been quite fun to play around with colors, fabrics and details to create unique pieces for all kinds of brides." The collection, comprised of ten styles, is inspired by Parker's vision of a modern, non-traditional bride, and is designed to dress a woman for a variety of wedding milestone moments; from her bridal shower through her wedding reception. Styles offered are a unique mix of classic dresses and gowns, modern bodysuits, full skirts, and a jumpsuit. The color palette includes traditional bridal white, sleek black, plus pops of blush, poppy, light gray and blue.

Designed in collaboration with Gilt, the collection was produced in New York City utilizing fabrics like cashmere and stretch crepe sourced from Spain, Italy and France.

The pieces all feature carefully curated details like elegant bows, sophisticated cutouts, feathers, intricate embroidery and beautiful hand-stitched beading.

The actress and style icon is no stranger to chic bridal wear. Carrie Badshaw, famously played by Parker, took part in an elaborate bridal photo shoot in Sex and the City: The Movie. The shoot featured gowns from designers like Christian Lacroix and Lanvin. Parker famously wore a black wedding gown for her own wedding to Matthew Broderick in 1997.

"Not only is Sarah Jessica Parker's style known around the world, her point of view is one-of-a-kind," says Tom Ott, Chief Merchant of Gilt. "Sarah Jessica brings her impeccable taste and fashion sensibility to life in this collection. We think our customers will be delighted with the offering which is stylish and well-priced in the bridal category."

As part of the bridal launch, Gilt will also offer 15 exclusive styles from the SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker footwear line, each of which are complementary to the bridal collection.

The offers were each chosen as a way to help brides plan for and celebrate the big day with highlights including, Leather Spa, Lars Nord Studio Tailoring, Mah-Ze-Dahr Bakery, among others.
